Antifa, they’ve been a constant force in US politics for over a year now, but people still struggle to understand them, their motives, and their mindset. So, what is Antifa? Antifa is a protest group, created in opposition to the right, especially supporters of President Donald Trump. But unlike many other protest groups, Antifaisn’t satisfied with simply voicing their opinions and their opposition to their enemies. They want to outright destroy their opponents through violence.
This leads to constant confrontations between them and the right, and ends up causing the Streisand Effect. Attempts by the group to silence their opposition have led to the exact opposite happening;they have heavily contributed to the rise of the right. The Alt Right specifically. Antifa isn’t bound by a specific ideology, despite being associated with Anarchism. Many of their members are uneducated, and know little about politics in general. The movement presents a Radical Leftist image, and while it is made up of people on the Left Wing, many of them don’t understand the differences between different forms of Leftism, or ideologies as a whole.
This is why they are quick to label certain people or groups as “Racist” “Fascist” or “White Supremacist” without being able to prove that they hold those beliefs. Through this lack of understanding, Antifa members can easily be convinced that anyone who opposes them is a Fascist, and that these Fascists must be destroyed at all costs, acting as a perfect justification for their violent acts against people who, in reality, aren’t threats and most of the time aren’t Fascists either. For violence to be acceptable in Antifa’s eyes, they just need to believe that their opponent is a Nazi;they don’t actually have to be a Nazi, they just need to be called one.
Antifa members also often compare themselves to historical equality advocates to justify their cause; believing that their attacks on the right are in defence of minorities and the oppressed, and that they are fighting for equality just as historical figures such as Martin Luther King did in the past. Antifa members are unable to realise that racism is rejected by the majority of modern American society, and believe that America is still where it was decades ago:without racial equality or fair treatment.
This is how Antifa is able to present its delusional worldview as the way forward. By presenting their movement as the only way to social progress and those opposing it as Fascist oppressors fighting against equality and freedom. The rise of the Alt Right has heavily strengthened this view, by showing White Nationalists on the streets of the US, Antifa can convince its members that the Alt Right is a far bigger threat than they actually are. The Alt Right uses the same tactic against the left, by presenting Antifa as a massive threat, and their attempts to encourage white guilt as justification for White Nationalism.
With these tactics, the Alt Right and Antifa strengthen each other by using the other as a scapegoat. Through these tactics, conflict builds repeatedly until one movement chooses to back down, that movement usually being Antifa, as its members are too weakly coordinated to stand a chance against the well-prepared masses of the right resisting them. This leads to Antifa almost always failing in its objectives, and leading to the strengthening of the right and the demonization of Anarchists in the process.
